Military Airfare Rates That Civilians Don’t Know About

Military airfare discounts have gotten complicated with all the conflicting information about which rates apply, which airlines offer them, and how to actually book them. As someone who has tracked down IATA military fares on routes where the savings were significant — and once booked wrong and had to unwind a mixed itinerary — I’ve learned how this system actually works. Today, I’ll share it all with you.

The International Air Transport Association publishes military airfare rates — typically referred to as IATA military fares — that are substantially lower than published commercial fares on many routes, available to active duty military, Guard, and Reserve members traveling on orders or on leave. These aren’t always the cheapest option (advance-purchase commercial fares can undercut them), but on routes where flexible, refundable travel matters or where demand drives commercial prices up, IATA military rates can be significantly more economical than what a civilian purchasing the same ticket would pay.

Where to Find Military Rates

Not all airlines publish military fares, and those that do don’t always advertise them on their main booking pages. Calling the airline’s reservations line directly and asking specifically about military rates is often more reliable than clicking through the website.

That’s what makes the direct-call approach endearing to service members who’ve discovered it — the fare quoted on the website and the fare quoted when you call and identify as military are not always the same, and the agent has access to inventory and pricing the automated systems don’t always surface.

Documentation Requirements

IATA military fares require documentation of military status at booking and sometimes at boarding. A copy of orders for official travel, or CAC and military ID for leave travel, is typically sufficient. The exact documentation requirements vary by airline and route. If you’ve booked a military fare, have your documentation accessible at the gate — a fare dispute at boarding is not a productive use of anyone’s time.

Leave Travel vs. Official Travel Fares

I’m apparently someone who booked a LICOT itinerary before verifying which portions qualified for military rates, ended up with a mixed booking that required a phone call to unwind. Some military rates apply only to official travel (on orders); others apply to leave travel as well. The distinction matters depending on whether your trip is TDY or personal.

Compare Before You Commit

Probably should have led with this, honestly: military rates aren’t automatically the best option for every route and date. They tend to beat commercial rates on routes with high demand and limited advance-purchase discounts, and on international routes where the fare differential is larger. On domestic routes with cheap advance fares, a standard commercial booking sometimes wins. Check both before committing — you need the comparison to make an informed decision, not the assumption that one category is always cheaper.
