As someone who has traveled to these hubs countless times, I can tell you that some TDY destinations come up so often they become familiar territory. I learned everything about navigating these locations through experience. Washington DC, San Antonio, and other military hubs see constant traffic. The upside? Generations of travelers have accumulated local knowledge that makes these trips way more manageable.
Washington DC Area
Probably should have led with this since it’s the most common: the National Capital Region hosts an endless stream of TDY travelers headed to the Pentagon, various headquarters, and government agencies. Per diem rates here are among the highest you’ll see, but they reflect what things actually cost. If your business is at the Pentagon, the Metro often eliminates the need for a rental car entirely.
That’s what makes Crystal City and Arlington endearing to us DC travelers: hotels there give you convenient access to military facilities with enough competition to benefit travelers. Looking at Alexandria or DC itself? You’ll trade some commute time for different neighborhood experiences.
San Antonio
Joint Base San Antonio combines three major installations, which means constant TDY traffic. Lackland handles basic training, Randolph focuses on pilot training, and Fort Sam Houston covers medical training. The good news is per diem rates here stay moderate compared to coastal cities.
The River Walk area is great for downtime entertainment, though lodging there often runs over government rates. For longer stays, extended stay options near the bases make more practical sense.
Colorado Springs
Peterson Space Force Base, the Air Force Academy, and a bunch of defense contractors all pull travelers to Colorado Springs. Has gotten complicated with all the Space Force reorganization, but the mountain setting provides recreation opportunities that can make extended TDYs much more bearable.
Fair warning – the altitude hits some people hard during the first few days. Plan your physical activity accordingly and drink plenty of water to help with acclimation. The government lodging options here have gotten significantly better in recent years.
Destination Research
Before any TDY, reach out to colleagues who’ve been there recently. Their on-the-ground intelligence about lodging, dining, and transportation will save you time and money. Online military forums often have extensive location-specific advice too.
