TDY Packing: Travel Light and Ready

As someone who has refined my packing system over countless TDY trips, I can tell you that efficient packing separates experienced TDY travelers from those struggling with excess luggage. I learned everything through overstuffed bags and forgotten essentials. Building a reliable packing system reduces pre-trip stress and ensures you never leave critical items behind.

The Carry-On Philosophy

Probably should have led with this because it changed how I travel: many seasoned travelers never check bags, regardless of trip length. Carry-on only eliminates lost luggage risk, speeds you through airports, and forces disciplined packing. A week-long TDY absolutely fits in a proper carry-on with strategic choices.

That’s what makes this approach endearing to us frequent travelers: the key to carry-on success is wrinkle-resistant clothing that mixes and matches for multiple outfits. Technical fabrics designed for travel perform way better than traditional business wear. Fewer pieces worn multiple ways beats lots of pieces worn once.

Essential Electronics

Power adapters and charging cables rank among the most-forgotten items. Pack a small power strip to solve hotel rooms with insufficient outlets. Portable batteries keep your devices running during long travel days.

Travel packing organization

Has gotten complicated with all the different devices and airline rules, but laptop bags and briefcases that comply with personal item dimensions maximize your carry-on allowance. Know the airline-specific size limits to prevent gate-check surprises. Stuffing personal items to the limit while keeping in-flight necessities accessible takes practice.

Uniform and Professional Attire

Your TDY purpose determines clothing needs. Garrison uniform requirements differ from deployment packing lists. Civilian professional settings might call for business casual or formal attire depending on the mission.

Rolling uniform items prevents creases better than folding. Hang them immediately when you arrive to reduce wrinkles further. Keep a small travel iron or steamer to solve any remaining issues. Some hotels provide irons, others require you to bring your own.

The TDY Go-Bag

Maintain a partially-packed TDY bag between trips to streamline preparation. Toiletries, chargers, and other always-needed items stay ready. You only need to add clothing and trip-specific items before departure.

Restock the go-bag immediately after returning home to ensure readiness for short-notice travel. The fifteen minutes you invest post-trip saves hours when the next last-minute TDY order arrives.
